One easy way to start is by using tomatoes from the supermarket as a seed source.
How to Grow your Tomatoes from Supermarket Tomatoes.
1. Choose ripe, healthy looking tomatoes from the supermarket. Avoid any that are overripe or have any signs of decay.
2. Cut the tomatoes in half and scoop out the seeds and gel into a bowl. Rinse the seeds with water to remove any remaining gel.
3. Spread the seeds out on a paper towel or coffee filter to dry. Leave them in a warm, dry place for a few days until they are completely dry.
4. Once the seeds are dry, store them in a labelled envelope or container in a cool, dry place until you’re ready to plant them.
5. When you’re ready to plant, fill seed trays or pots with seed compost and plant the seeds about half an inch deep. Keep the compost moist and in a warm place, and seedlings should appear in 7-14 days.
6. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into larger pots or into your garden. Keep them well-watered and in a sunny location.
The germination rate of supermarket seeds can be low, and the resulting plants may not be true to the variety of the seed source.
However some of the varieties of tomatoes commercially sold in supermarkets are often hybrids and may not breed true if seed is saved, so the resulting plants may not be identical to the parent plant.
