Visiting Four Countries in Just a Few Days: Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, and Serbia

Travel Challenge: Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, and Serbia

Exploring the Balkans is one of the easiest ways in Europe to experience multiple countries in a single short trip. Within a few hours’ drive you can move between Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, and Serbia — each with its own culture, history, and landscapes. With efficient planning, you can land in one airport and find yourself enjoying four distinct nations in less than a week.

Starting Point: Croatia (Dubrovnik Airport)

Why start here? Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) is well connected to London and other European hubs, making it the ideal gateway.

Attractions nearby:

  • The medieval Old Town of Dubrovnik, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

  • City Walls and Fort Lovrijenac, famous for both history and film locations.

  • A short boat ride to Lokrum Island or the nearby Elaphiti Islands.

Next Stop: Montenegro

Just two hours south of Dubrovnik, crossing the border brings you into Montenegro, a small country packed with natural beauty.

Attractions:

  • The Bay of Kotor, often compared to a fjord, with the historic town of Kotor and its Venetian walls.

  • Budva, known for sandy beaches and a lively old town.

  • Perast and its iconic islets with monasteries and churches in the middle of the bay.

Airports: Podgorica (TGD) and Tivat (TIV) are the main gateways, but from Dubrovnik, it’s easiest by road.

Continuing South: Albania

From Montenegro, the coastal highway leads directly into Albania. The nearest crossing is into Shkodër, one of Albania’s oldest cities.

Attractions:

  • Rozafa Castle in Shkodër with sweeping views of rivers and mountains.

  • The Albanian Riviera, if you continue further south, with turquoise beaches and charming villages.

  • Local markets, Ottoman-era mosques, and strong cultural traditions.

Airports: Tirana International Airport (TIA) is Albania’s main hub, about 2 hours’ drive from Shkodër.

Inland to Serbia

From Albania or Montenegro, heading north and east brings you into Serbia. While it’s a longer overland trip, it completes the four-country circuit.

Attractions:

  • Belgrade, Serbia’s capital, with the mighty Kalemegdan Fortress overlooking the Danube and Sava Rivers.

  • The Nikola Tesla Museum, showcasing the country’s most famous inventor.

  • A vibrant café and nightlife culture unique to the Balkans.

Airports: Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) offers many direct flights back to London and across Europe.

How It Fits Together

  • Day 1–2: Land in Dubrovnik, explore Croatia.

  • Day 3: Cross to Montenegro for Kotor and Budva.

  • Day 4: Continue into Albania via Shkodër.

  • Day 5–6: Travel inland to Serbia, ending in Belgrade.

  • Day 7: Fly home from Belgrade.

Why It Works

Distances in the Balkans are short, and border crossings are relatively quick compared to other parts of the world. By combining road trips with well-connected airports, you can comfortably see four countries in under a week, each offering a different mix of Adriatic coastline, mountain landscapes, medieval towns, and vibrant cities.
